Topic: Above the Clouds and Out of Your Lane: In-Flight Emergencies for Pediatricians

Objective(s):

  • Describe the epidemiology, common presentations, and medico-legal considerations of in-flight medical emergencies encountered by physicians responding outside their usual scope of practice. 
  • Apply a practical, stepwise approach to assessing and stabilizing medical emergencies across the age spectrum using the limited equipment, medications, and support available during commercial flights. 
  • Demonstrate effective communication and decision-making with flight crews and ground medical support, including determining when to recommend flight diversion.
