Topic: Updates in Pediatric Sepsis: Precision, Phenotypes, and Emerging Therapies

Objective(s):

  • Review the 2024 Phoenix pediatric sepsis criteria and contrast them with historical SIRS-based definitions (what changes clinically/research-wise).
  • Describe major approaches to pediatric sepsis phenotyping/endotyping (clinical trajectories, biomarkers, etc.) and recognize examples.
  • Evaluate the evidence for precision/adjunctive therapies in pediatric sepsis (e.g., immunomodulation, extracorporeal blood purification, vasoactive rescue), including which patients might plausibly benefit and where uncertainty remains.
