Trauma Assessment

  • Describe the six phases of patient assessment
  • Describe the initial assessment of a trauma patient and what areas are critical to evaluate.
  • Define a priority patient and discuss several illnesses or suspected injuries that would lead you to classify a patient in this fashion
  • Describe the mechanism of evaluating the effectiveness of perfusion including pulse and skin color
  • Describe the need for communication with either medical direction or the receiving facility when transporting a patient
  • Discuss the benefits of accurate documentation
Orthopedic Injuries 
  • Describe the different types of musculoskeletal injuries, including fractures, dislocations, amputations, sprains, and strains.
  • Recognize the characteristics of specific types of musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Differentiate between open and closed fractures.
  • Explain how to assess the severity of an injury.
  • Describe the emergency medical care of the patient with an orthopedic injury.
  • Describe the emergency medical care of the patient with a swollen, painful, deformed extremity (fracture).
  • Discuss the need for, general rules of, and possible complications of splinting.
  • Explain the reasons for splinting fractures, dislocations, and sprains at the scene versus transporting the patient immediately.
  • Describe the emergency medical care of the patient with an amputation.

Spinal Injury Protocol

  • Review the nervous system anatomy and physiology.
  • Discuss up-to-date evidence based care for spinal injuries and current recommendations for pre-hospital providers.
  • Review Greenville County EMS Clinical Operating Guideline.
