Managing Abstinence in Newborns (MAiN)
A multidisciplinary program to manage
opioid-dependent newborns in communities across South Carolina
Overview
Since 2011, the SC Birth Outcomes Initiative sponsored by the SC Department of Health and Human Services has hosted a multidisciplinary working group of stakeholders to discuss behavioral health challenges during pregnancy. One of the primary areas of focus for this group has become the rapid rise in opioid use disorders during pregnancy and subsequent neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) due to opioid withdrawal at birth. This guidance is an effort to provide an approach to care for the opioid-dependent mother and her newborn that combines evidence, innovation, and the needs of a variety of stakeholders, including families, hospitals, and SC Medicaid programs.
