Combatting the Growing Opioid Crisis in South Carolina

OVERVIEW

The focus of this activity is surrounding the prescribing and monitoring of opioids however there is broader discussion embedded such as drug take-back programs and safe disposal of medications. State and federal laws and guidelines will be reviewed also. This activity is designed to change competence and ultimately patient outcomes by providing healthcare providers with knowledge of laws, prescribing guidelines, and resources to assist in the treatment of patients who are using opioids.  

This two-hour enduring material activity meets the requirements of the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners for two hours of CME related to controlled substance prescribing and monitoring.

Learning Objectives

Upon the completion of this activity, the learner should be able to:

  • Gain understanding of the current state and federal laws surrounding opioid prescribing and monitoring.
  • Choose the correct resource from the available resources to assist healthcare providers in managing acute and chronic pain including non-pharmacological and non-opioid pharmacotherapy.
  • Differentiate between strategies that healthcare providers can utilize to serve patients and communities in combating the opioid crisis.
