Topic: Hypercoagulability in Pregnancy

Objectives: 

  • Recognize the physiologic hypercoagulable state of pregnancy and identify additional risk factors that increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE).  
  • Identify the clinical presentation and appropriate diagnostic evaluation of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and superficial venous thrombosis (SVT) during pregnancy.
  • Review evidence-based management of VTE during pregnancy, including anticoagulation, maternal-fetal considerations, and peripartum planning.  
  • Discuss the relationship between hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, including preeclampsia, and thromboembolic risk.  
  • Recognize the unique medical and psychosocial challenges of adolescent pregnancy and their impact on maternal outcomes.
