Topic: Metabolic Acidosis Meets Airway Emergency - A Case Presentation

Objectives: 

  1. Construct a comprehensive differential diagnosis for a given clinical presentation using a schema-based approach.
  2. Spot the signs and symptoms of an impending airway emergency and identify steps for appropriate escalation of care.
  3. Review the clinical presentation, diagnostic criteria, and medical vs surgical management in an adult patient with acute supraglottitis.
  4. Compare and contrast the risk factors, prevalence, etiology, complications, and prognosis of acute supraglottitis in adult vs pediatric patients.
  5. Summarize current research and discuss a potential mechanism/describe the pathophysiologic basis for the patient's clinical presentation.
  6. Recognize the pitfalls of and propose strategies to mitigate confirmation, social, and anchoring bias in clinical practice.
