Topic: South Carolina Pediatric Palliative and Hospice Care Collaborative

Speaker: Weston Rice

Objectives:

  1. Compare and contrast common good death ideals in pediatric palliative and veterinary medicine, including palliative, euthanasia, pathocentric, and animal hospice frameworks, and articulate how each shapes end-of-life decision-making.
  2. Identify at least two ways veterinary end-of-life care concepts are influencing pediatric palliative medicine and discuss the potential benefits and risks for non-autonomous patients.
  3. Apply insights from veterinary palliative care models observed during the zoo facility visit to reflect on goals-of-care conversations and surrogate decision-making within their own teams.
  4. Discuss the ethical implications of the human-animal dying analogy as used by families and the public, and develop strategies for responding in a clinically informed way.
