As aortic disease becomes more complex, the treatment algorithm has also become more complex. Multiple options are available for treatment, such as iliac branch devices, chimney/snorkel techniques, and fenestrated endografts. Many of these options, which are used routinely in practice, are only briefly discussed in textbooks currently used for training. In turn, trainees are left to rely heavily on their experience throughout their residency and fellowship. Not all training programs have adopted the use of more advanced techniques in the treatment of aneurysmal disease. Furthermore, as endovascular therapy is able to treat a wider variety of anatomy than before, experience in open surgical repair has decreased significantly over the last few years. In fact, at the recent annual meeting of the Association of Program Directors Vascular Surgery (APDVS), the lack of open experience in the treatment of aortic pathologies was a topic of concern. More programs are graduating fellows and residents who have less experience in open aortic aneurysm repair and, in some cases, have no exposure to open surgical treatment.

The aim of our course is to provide a concise summary of technologies which are available currently as well as a treatment algorithm for aortic aneurysms. Our program will consist of 2 days: Day 1 will be classroom/didactic-based, and Day 2 will be simulator and cadaver lab-based. Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits will also be provided. Course instructors will describe the indications for use for newer endovascular technologies as well as "bailout” strategies to avoid complications. The participants will then be able to gain hands-on experience through simulation models. In the cadaver lab, we will instruct the participants on the exposure and treatment for juxtarenal abdominal aortic aneurysm as well as thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm.
