Overview
The Southeast Hub is a collaborative learning network of residency programs that delivers annual faculty development in competency-based medical education (CBME) to educators across the Southeast region. The Southeast Hub is partnered with the ACGME to offer this course with the intention of furthering faculty development in GME and assessment.
The course is intended for GME faculty members to both learn best practices in assessment and practice direct observation and feedback skills in a safe, learning-focused environment. The course is modeled after the ACGME's popular Chicago-based course, Developing Faculty Competencies in Assessment. Attendees will experience didactic theory bursts interspersed with small breakout group activities before practicing direct observation skills and giving feedback at the University of South Caroline School of Medicine SIM Center. The last part of the course will focus on resident coaching and creating individualized learning plans (ILPs). All participants will leave with an action plan for program self-assessment that attendees can bring back to their programs. This activity is ideal for residency or fellowship leadership and faculty.
This activity has been approved for Academy of Educators (AoE) credit.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this faculty development program, participants should be able to:
- Describe key principles of adult learning theory and apply these concepts to the education of residents as adult learners.
- Apply educational theory to create or modify teaching activities and learning experiences within their own residency programs.
- Conduct structured direct observations of resident performance using validated assessment tools.
- Provide timely, behavior-based feedback to residents that promotes reflection, skill development, and patient safety.
- Evaluate resident competency accurately based on direct observation rather than self-reported performance, minimizing bias.
- Develop and implement individualized learning plans (ILPs) for residents and create a program-level action plan for ongoing competency-based education and assessment.
