Module 2: SBIRT and Motivational Interviewing

The following components are included in each module:

  1. A pretest to assess student knowledge/learning and prepare students for certification type questions on the topic.
  2. National experts present the educational content including information about screening for the substance, treatment considerations and clinical implications.
  3. A video(s) of persons with lived experiences present their stories about the use of the substance.
  4. A posttest to assess student knowledge/learning.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify a substance use screening strategy relevant to their patient populations
  2. Review the clinical delivery of brief interventions for patients with substance use problems
  3. Describe the components of the spirit and four processes of motivational interviewing
  4. Recognize change talk and apply the basic MI skills of open-ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening, and summaries to selectively reinforce change talk 5. Identify further training opportunities for practicing the skills of motivational interviewing
