Learning Objectives
As a result of participating in this activity, learners will...
- Know more about current osteoporosis screening, diagnosis, and management recommendations, including recent updates from national and specialty society guidelines.
- Experience validated risk assessment tools (such as FRAX), indications for bone mineral density (BMD) testing, and approaches to identifying secondary causes of osteoporosis.
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions, including the indications, benefits, and limitations of available therapies.
- Increase their awareness of osteoporosis in men, younger adults, cancer survivors, and populations at risk for health inequities, equipping learners to recognize and address these gaps in care.
- Understand the benefits and implementation of collaborative care pathways and fracture liaison services to improve patient outcomes.
- Bridge the gap between knowledge and clinical application, empowering them to apply new information in their daily practice.
- Gain hands-on experience using clinical risk assessment tools (such as FRAX) and interpreting bone mineral density (BMD) results, enabling them to accurately identify patients at risk for osteoporosis and fractures.
- Build skills in selecting and sequencing appropriate pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic therapies, including managing transitions between agents and addressing complex cases (e.g., secondary osteoporosis, men, and patients with comorbidities).
- Gain strategies for effective patient education on osteoporosis, lifestyle modifications, fall prevention, and medication adherence.
- Develop the ability to coordinate care across orthopedics, endocrinology, rheumatology, and primary care, utilizing best practices for communication and follow-up in a team-based model.
- Acquire practical approaches to recognize and overcome barriers related to health equity, access, and patient engagement, ensuring more comprehensive and equitable osteoporosis care.
- Be able to apply new knowledge and skills to clinical scenarios, improving their confidence and competence in managing osteoporosis in diverse patient populations.
