The Rescue, Austere Medicine, and Survival (RAMS) course is designed for medical professionals of all levels who have an interest in expanding their knowledge of wilderness medicine pathology and enhancing their practical skills in a wilderness environment. Our expert instructors employ a wide scope of teaching methods, balancing didactic lectures with practical, hands-on skills and scenarios. Emphasis is placed not just on the materials learned, but the critical decision-making skills surrounding effective backcountry medical management.

Overview

During this 3-day in-person course, students will learn the latest wilderness medicine skills for patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and evacuation. Our expert instructors employ a wide scope of teaching methods, balancing didactic lectures with practical, hands-on skills and scenarios. Emphasis is placed not just on the materials learned, but the critical decision making skills surrounding effective backcountry medical management.

 


 

Target Audience

Emergency Medicine

Medical professionals of all levels (MD, EMT, PA, NP, RN, etc) who have an interest in expanding their knowledge of wilderness medicine pathology and enhancing their practical skills in a wilderness environment.

  • Primary Audience: Practicing Physicians, Fellows, Residents
  • Secondary Audience: Emergency Medical Services, Medical Students, Nurse Practitioners, Occupational Therapists, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Registered Nurses, Physical Therapists

Learning Objectives

As a result of participating in this educational activity, learners will...

  • Gain a practical foundation in wilderness medicine for medical professionals
  • Be able to apply patient assessment and treatment guidelines for life support until definitive care or evacuation is available
  • Be able to describe the physiology of medical conditions encountered in wild places
  • Be able to apply methods for managing medical and trauma emergencies in the wilderness when evacuation is unavailable or unnecessary

Located between Asheville, North Carolina, and Greenville, South Carolina, our course is surrounded by unlimited outdoor activities. Enjoy South Carolina’s most popular state parks or find your flow on any of the hundreds of mountain bike trails nearby. Bring your bike, hiking boots, or fishing rods, and come learn and play with us in Greenville. Complimentary lunches are provided, and complimentary housing is available as part of this course.
